The Amarnath Yatra is a Hindu pilgrimage undertaken to a distant mountain cave in the Himalayas in the Hindu month of Shravan. This Yatra is held to commemorate the event when Lord Shiva told the story of immortality to his consort Parvathi. The holy Amarnath Cave is believed to be the place where Shiva imparted this knowledge to Parvathi and hence has assumed a special religious significance in Hindu mythology.

This cave is most famous for its over nine feet high Shiva Lingam made of crystalline ice. Therefore with view of imparting this knowledge to Parvathi, Shiva proceeded to the distant Amarnath Cave. Enroute, at a place called Bail Gaon (Pahalgam) he left behind his Vehicle the Nandi. He released the moon from his hair at a place called Chandanwadi. Further along he released the snakes at a place called Seshnag and finally left his son Ganesh to guard the cave at a place called Maha Gunas Parbat. Thereafter he released the five elements (air, water, fire, sky, earth) of whom he is the master of, at panchtarani.

When he reached the Amarnath cave he created a terrible ball of fire which destroyed all living beings in the vicinity of the Cave. However unknown to Shiva, a pair of eggs were saved from the fire because they were underneath Shiva. A pair of pigeons hatched out of these eggs and legends have it that they became immortal by listening to the Amar Katha. Even today one can see a pair of pigeons in Amarnath Cave.

Based on this legend, the annual Amarnath Yatra follows the same route as mentioned in the legend. Pilgrims start the Yatra from Pahalgam and walk through chandanwadi, seshnag, ganesh top, panchtarani to reach the Amarnath Cave. The total distance is about 42 km which is either covered on foot or by ponies. Helicopter services have also been launched recently.
